Here I would like to conduct my reade=
rs on a brief tour about the Divine Word University campus in Madang, Pa=
pua New Guinea. …
First, I should point out that these =
days DWU operates several campuses, a few elsewhere in Madang and severa=
l in other cities. These pictures are all from the "main" or =
original campus.
Let's begin with this sidewalk scene headi=
ng toward the Administration Building.
I like this picture because=
it is so typical, with the long straight row of palm trees beside the s=
idewalk. There is a "front" of the admin building that maybe =
I will post on some other day (after I take the picture).
=
Here is the campus chapel, the Joseph Freinademetz C=
hapel.
It is =
named after one of the earliest members of the Society of the Divine Wor=
d (SVD), who was a missionary to China.
Two typical street scenes.
The one is near the front of the campus, near the=
library. I'm not sure what all the flagpoles are for. The other i=
s approaching one of several staff housing areas on campus. This is not=
our neighborhood.
Speaking =
of residents, here are some of the dormitories.
The l=
ong view on the left shows one cluster of male residence dormitories. T=
he blue and white ones (to the right of the picture) are older, whereas =
the yellow ones are brand new, opening this term. The above picture on =
the right is a likewise brand new female residence dormitory. There are=
two of these, right next to each other and actually, they are not far f=
rom our house. However, the dorms all have fence compounds which cause =
the students to enter and exit the dorm clusters from a certain directio=
n, and the entry to these female dorms is on the side remote from our ho=
use.
And what=
would any campus be without classrooms?

The =
last two pictures show two of the long, low, blue and white buildings wh=
ich house most of the classrooms. These buildings are older, predating =
the University to the Institute (trade school) which was on this locatio=
n previously and the Secondary school before that.
Incidentally=
, in the last picture, nearest the camera and to the left, are some of t=
he Math and Computer rooms.
=
There are other things on campus=
, too. There's the Friendship Library,
=
the Staff Mess, where teaching staff and gra=
duate students dine,
the SVD Memorial Auditorium, seating 500 people,
the student coffee house ("=
;Kofi Haus" in pidgin) … we haven't been in that yet=
and the camp=
us Market which includes a bakery.
Okay … well, more pictures and more observations another d=
ay.
