Pompano Beach was first settled in 1884 as a farming community and took its name from
the fish species pompano that abounded in the nearby waters. The Town of Pompano was incorporated in 1908, but it was not until 1947 that it joined with the beach area to form the City of Pompano Beach. Its
landmark is the famous Hillsboro Lighthouse, named for the Earl of Hillsboro, who was given
large grants of land here during the English occupation.
