{"id":261,"date":"2013-02-05T03:02:00","date_gmt":"2013-02-05T08:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jwilliamcupp.name\/blog\/2013\/02\/05\/flying-foxes-of-papua-new-guinea\/"},"modified":"2013-02-05T03:02:00","modified_gmt":"2013-02-05T08:02:00","slug":"flying-foxes-of-papua-new-guinea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jwilliamcupp.name\/blog\/flying-foxes-of-papua-new-guinea\/","title":{"rendered":"Flying Foxes of Papua New Guinea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the more usual &#8212; you might sa=<br \/>\ny bizarre &#8212; things we have found in Papua New Guinea are the Flying Fox=<br \/>\nes. &#8230; <\/p>\n<p><!--more-->These are large bats (macrobats) and if you&#39;r=<br \/>\ne really interested, you can read about them in the <a href=3D\"http:\/\/en=\n.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flying_Foxes\" target=3D\"_blank\">Wikipedia<\/a> articl=<br \/>\ne.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, here are a few pictures.  Numerous Flying=<br \/>\n Foxes hang from the same tree.<br \/><span class=3D'imgleft'><img alt=3D'=\n' src=3D'http:\/\/thumbs.myopera.com\/sz\/colx\/bcupp\/albums\/13487932\/Flying_=\nFoxes_1.jpg' \/><\/span><br \/><span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D'' src=3D=\n'http:\/\/thumbs.myopera.com\/sz\/colx\/bcupp\/albums\/13487932\/Flying_Foxes_2.=\njpg' \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><br=\n\/><\/p>\n<p>If that didn&#038;#3=<br \/>\n9;t convince you, it&#39;s clear they are bats when you see them in flig=<br \/>\nht.<br \/><span class=3D'imgleft'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/thumbs.myope=\nra.com\/sz\/colx\/bcupp\/albums\/13487932\/fruit%20bat%20closeup%201.jpg' \/><\/=\nspan><br \/><span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/thumbs.my=\nopera.com\/sz\/colx\/bcupp\/albums\/13487932\/fruit%20bat%20closeup%202.jpg' \/=\n><\/span><\/p>\n<p><br\/=\n><\/p>\n<p>And, seeing a sky full of =<br \/>\nthem is downright spooky.<br \/><span class=3D'img'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'h=\nttp:\/\/thumbs.myopera.com\/sz\/colx\/bcupp\/albums\/13487932\/fruit%20bats%20in=\n%20flight%201.jpg' \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p>While they seem to prefer to sleep=<br \/>\n during the day, they are restless sleepers.  A colony of them in one la=<br \/>\nrge tree makes a continuous and unworldly sound.  And we are told they c=<br \/>\nan be flushed in broad daylight by sudden sounds, such as several people=<br \/>\n shouting and clapping hands under the tree.  Why anyone would want to d=<br \/>\no that, I don&#39;t know.<\/p>\n<p>They begin to be active in the late a=<br \/>\nfternoon, 4 or 5 p.m. depending on whether sunny or overcast.  By twilig=<br \/>\nht, the skies are just filled with them flying everywhere.  We have hear=<br \/>\nd that no aircraft attempt to land at the airport between 6-8 p.m. daily=<br \/>\n, because the large number of Flying Foxes cause airplane strikes.
