{"id":359,"date":"2013-05-12T00:05:52","date_gmt":"2013-05-12T04:05:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jwilliamcupp.name\/blog\/2013\/05\/12\/medibur-papua-new-guinea\/"},"modified":"2013-05-12T00:05:52","modified_gmt":"2013-05-12T04:05:52","slug":"medibur-papua-new-guinea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jwilliamcupp.name\/blog\/medibur-papua-new-guinea\/","title":{"rendered":""},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In February we had the pleasure of ma=<br \/>\nking an excursion to the village of Medibur. &#8230; <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=3D=\n\"\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D14185012&amp;picture=3D186634722\" tar=\nget=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgleft'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files=\n.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14185012\/thumbs\/First_Arriving.jpg_thumb.jpg' =\n\/><\/span><\/a> This village about 100 km from Madang, but with the curves=<br \/>\n in the road and all it was a 325 km journey.  The trip took us about ei=<br \/>\nght hours one Sunday.  A friend from DWU, Brother Brendan, was our tour =<br \/>\nguide and along the way we collected up a friend of his, Damlik.  Damlik=<br \/>\n is a recent DWU grad who is presently interning in medicine at a rural =<br \/>\nhealth center and soon will be a practicing doctor.  We picked up Damlik=<br \/>\n on the outbound journey and enjoyed the day with him.  (You can see Dam=<br \/>\nlik in the photo of the dug out canoe.)<\/p>\n<p>The trip took us along =<br \/>\nthe North Coast Highway from Madang.  The road was in excellent conditio=<br \/>\nn in places and very rough and pot-holed in others.  On good stretches w=<br \/>\ne could manage as much as 80-100 km\/hr but in many places we only averag=<br \/>\ned around 20 km\/hr.  It turns out Br. Brendan knows a few folks in Medib=<br \/>\nur. The village has a=<br \/>\n generator which they can choose to run if they care to use the fuel.  S=<br \/>\nuch villages sometimes run their generator for a few hours each week.  C=<br \/>\nooking is done over open fires and you can see laundry in the pictures.<=\nbr\/><\/p>\n<p>We were told =<br \/>\nthere is an open pit toilet across the highway from the village (20-30 m=<br \/>\neters away).  There is also a school for the children somewhere nearby a=<br \/>\nnd a rural health clinic within a few kilometers. Children are certainly the international ambassadors of good will=<br \/>\n, everywhere.  They laughed, sang, ran, and played all around us.  When =<br \/>\nthey saw our camera, they just had to have their pictures taken.  Beside=<br \/>\ns me and Cindy, you can see Br. Brendan with the children.  We asked abo=<br \/>\nut the adults but it seems most adults simply go inside their houses whe=<br \/>\nn outsiders are in the village.  Br. Brendan did visit with the two men =<br \/>\nhe knows in the village.
