{"id":362,"date":"2013-05-14T17:05:18","date_gmt":"2013-05-14T21:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jwilliamcupp.name\/blog\/2013\/05\/14\/good-friday-stations-of-the-cross\/"},"modified":"2013-05-14T17:05:18","modified_gmt":"2013-05-14T21:05:18","slug":"good-friday-stations-of-the-cross","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jwilliamcupp.name\/blog\/good-friday-stations-of-the-cross\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Friday Stations of the Cross"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Good Friday the faith community he=<br \/>\nre at Divine Word University staged a procession of the Stations of the =<br \/>\nCross. &#8230; <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><a href=3D\"\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D1=\n4199502&amp;picture=3D186832602\" target=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgrig=\nht'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/=\nthumbs\/Station%201.jpg_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> For my non-Roman Catholi=<br \/>\nc readers, the Stations of the Cross are a liturgical form of deliberate=<br \/>\nly meditating on the passion and suffering of Jesus for all mankind, to =<br \/>\natone for our sins.  You can read more about it <a href=3D\"http:\/\/en.wik=\nipedia.org\/wiki\/Stations_of_the_Cross\" target=3D\"_blank\">here<\/a>.  If y=<br \/>\nou are curious, you can walk inside almost any Catholic Church and aroun=<br \/>\nd the outer walls of the sanctuary you will see paintings, or bas relief=<br \/>\n sculptures, depicting the fourteen stations of the cross.<\/p>\n<p><a h=\nref=3D\"\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D14199502&amp;picture=3D18683257=\n2\" target=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:=\n\/\/files.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/thumbs\/Station%201%20participa=\nnts%20gather.jpg_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> <br \/><a href=3D\"\/bcupp\/albums\/=\nshowpic.dml?album=3D14199502&amp;picture=3D186832592\" target=3D\"_blank\">=<br \/>\n<span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files.myopera.com\/b=\ncupp\/albums\/14199502\/thumbs\/Station%202_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> The pho=<br \/>\ntos here will show some of the sights of the outdoor Stations of the Cro=<br \/>\nss, the processional leading from point to point, and most importantly, =<br \/>\nthe people here.<\/p>\n<p><a href=3D\"\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D1=\n4199502&amp;picture=3D186832562\" target=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgrig=\nht'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/=\nthumbs\/Processional%20between%20stations.jpg_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> Na=<br \/>\nturally, the practice of following the Stations of the Cross gets more e=<br \/>\nmphasis in Lent.  On campus during the morning of Good Friday the studen=<br \/>\nt body put together a processional which wound around and off campus, st=<br \/>\nopping at fourteen locations.  At each stopping point, a group of studen=<br \/>\nts representing one of the regional areas of Papua New Guinea had built =<br \/>\na temporary Station of the Cross.  There was a liturgy consisting of sha=<br \/>\nred prayers and meditations, including a leader and response format at e=<br \/>\nach station.<\/p>\n<p><a href=3D\"\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D14199=\n502&amp;picture=3D186832542\" target=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgright'>=<br \/>\n<img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/thum=\nbs\/Station%2012.jpg_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> As the processional approac=<br \/>\nhed each station, representatives from the group ahead would meet the pr=<br \/>\nocession.  <a href=3D\"\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D14199502&amp;pic=\nture=3D186832552\" target=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D=\n'' src=3D'http:\/\/files.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/thumbs\/Processi=\nonal%20between%20stations%202.jpg_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> We would stop=<br \/>\n as a large cross being carried from station to station was transferred =<br \/>\nto the new group. Then as we moved on, music in the style of that region=<br \/>\nal group would greet the arriving procession.  The music was always somb=<br \/>\ner and low tones (dirges) but the differences in style were unmistakeabl=<br \/>\ne.  Moroever, many of the regional participants wore clothes and decorat=<br \/>\nive attire reminiscient of their home regions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=3D\"\/bcup=\np\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D14199502&amp;picture=3D186833942\" target=3D=\n\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files.myop=\nera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/thumbs\/Station%2014%20arriving.jpg_thumb.j=\npg' \/><\/span><\/a> After the liturgical mediation at that station, the la=<br \/>\nrge cross was picked up again and carried on toward the next group waiti=<br \/>\nng near the next station.  All told, the procession traveled about 1.5 m=<br \/>\niles and overall took about three-and-a-half hours.<\/p>\n<p><a href=3D\"=\n\/bcupp\/albums\/showpic.dml?album=3D14199502&amp;picture=3D186832622\" targ=\net=3D\"_blank\"><span class=3D'imgright'><img alt=3D'' src=3D'http:\/\/files=\n.myopera.com\/bcupp\/albums\/14199502\/thumbs\/Ending%20-%20entering%20Chapel=\n.jpg_thumb.jpg' \/><\/span><\/a> We received a liturgy guide written entire=<br \/>\nly in Tok Pisin that gave the text of the prayers and meditations at eac=<br \/>\nh station.<\/p>\n<p>I will provide highlights here with English translat=<br \/>\nions.  <\/p>\n<p>As an aside, <i>diwai<\/i> is the local word for branch =<br \/>\nor growing part of a tree or bush.   There is a pun (intentionally) form=<br \/>\ned out of the former name of this school, Divine Word Institute or Di-W-=<br \/>\nI and yet today the campus post office is the Diwai Post Office, the min=<br \/>\ni supermarket on campus is the Diwai Market, and so on.
