History of the Shook Family: There are two origins of the name Shook. One is Saxon and is rendered Schück in German and Dutch. It signifies twelve or a dozen as applied to sheaves in a harvest field. Also, Shuckburg is a place in Warwickshire in England; the word (from the Saxon) means an immunity; privilege, baronial or royal court; burgh or town.
The original Shooks were Saxons and came from the Northwest part of Germany, who went to England in the 1400's. They had followed the sea in Germany; in England they were ship builders. In the first census made in London, England in 1614, the name Shook is listed, with a nationality of Anglo-Saxon. To be listed, a person would have to been in business, in an important occupation, or in the military. About 1628, they left England and came to the Jamestown settlement in Virginia. Some of the settlers came from Pennsylvania and Virginia by way of Harpers Ferry and up the south branch valley of the Potomac River (which is now West Virginia) Some went to Ohio.
According to Silas Elias Shook, The first Shooks were builders of ships in England, west of London. They came to America around 1640. There was three occupations at the Jamestown colony; there were carpenters, blacksmiths and glass blowers. Our ancestors may have been metal workers or blacksmiths. They lived in Virginia before coming to Ohio. They settled first near Xenia, Ohio, then later came north to Rossburg, Ohio. There were quite a number of them.
