Born Karl Jacob Strauss, he anglicized his name to Charles James Strauss on immigration to America.
He was born at Schiffweiler, Saorgebief in the Ruhr, Germany, one of eleven children. Karls uncle (the father of Wilhelm Strauss [Staley]) had moved to America in 1847, and from the time he was twelve years old he dreamed of going there himself. Finally in Feb. 1881 his parents consented (he was then 24 years old). He left Schiffweiler by train on Mar. 9, 1881 in company with his brother Wilhelm and sailed from Antwerp aboard the ship Vaterland, sailing March 12th and landing in Hoboken March 26th. Karl traveled to Marietta, Ohio, where his uncle lived. Later, he moved to Wheeling and went into business as a grocer and cigar manufacturer in May, 1887 and continued as a businessman until his death.
