After completing his education through high school equivalent, he served with both the Army and Marine Corps. Later, he was deemed too old to reenlist for World War II. Following the war he worked in advertising sales in both West Virginia and Florida. They had five children and moved to Boca Raton, Florida in July, 1954 with their youngest son.
