He was an ordained minister in the Evangelical Association, which was a Wesleyan (Methodist) denomination founded by Jacob Allbright to serve the German speaking pioneers and which is now subsumed in the United Methodist Church. G.W. Cupp was the pastor in the Old Black Church in Richland Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania in 1849-50 and again in 1860. From the late 1840's onward he was a circuit preacher for up to 20 congregations. In 1862 he was elected District Superintendent and in 1875 he was back at the Old Black Church. In this capacity he oversaw the construction of the present edifice, now known as the Old Zion United Methodist Church in Venango County, Pennsylvania [Tanner]. His wifes name is listed in the 1860 Census [Tanner] Later, he lived in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania; from the inside flyleaf of A.Y. Cupps Bible there is a newspaper clipping Father G.W. Cupp ... of the Pittsburgh Conference .... passed away and buried Jan. 3, 1908 at age 87 [Kimpson].

Moved to Northumberland County, PA then around 1795 to Washington County, Kentucky. He owned his father's 2000 acres of land there after 1804, but lived in Lebanon, Marion County, KY in 1808 when Susannah was born. He sold the 2000 acres on Apr.17,1810 and that year lived in Harrison County, Indiana, remaining there until his death.
