One of the earliest settlers in the area, he lived for many years (c1809) in Milford Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania between the towns of New Centerville and New Lexington (he shows in the 1810 census as Frederick Cope [Kondratieff]). In the 1870 Census (p. 347), he gives his place of birth as Pennsylvania and states that his father was born in America but his mother was foreign born [Corning]. In 1864, when son Jonas was discharged from the Union Army, Frederick, Susan, their daughter Nancy and their son Jonas, along with their son Aaron, his wife and three year old daughter moved to Mt. Etna, near Corning, Iowa. In that vicinity there was a settlement of Dunkards who built a church in which they held monthly meetings [Corning]. By the 1870 Census, his son Jonas Cupp was listed as head of a household including Frederick, Susan and their daughter Nancy. They farmed a 40-acre plot with 15 acres cultivated worth $600, livestock consisting of 1 horse, 1 cow, and 3 swine worth $130. During that year the farm produced 81 bushels of yellow corn and 60 lbs. of butter. Frederick, Susan and Nancy are buried in Mt. Etna Cemetery, Adams County, Iowa. [Shultz] states that Frederick Cupp is probably a brother of Peter Cupp (Capp). (Note that [Shultz] has Frederick d. Aug. 1869.)
([Matthiesen] reports another spouse of Frederick Cupps children as Sarah Dingle, but the source does not correlate which offspring she married. Also, an article in the History of Adams County Iowa, 1984 (sent to me by [Brunson]) claims that the father of Jonas Cupp was one Frederich Cupp who was born in 1778 in Alsace Lorraine and came to United States with the Hugenots where he worked his way to Pennsylvania Dutch country. There he married Christina Herrator and had ten children. After Christina died, Frederick married Susan Shafter. Though this account is believed to be erroneous, some of these details show up in various other accounts.)
