As a young man he was a trainman; the 1900 census gives his occupation as stationary engineer. For a number of years he served as the night engineer at the Frankfort Ice and Coal Company. Later he was employed by the Clover Leaf division of the Nickel Plate Railroad, which ran between St. Louis, Missouri and Delphus (near Toledo), Ohio and had a roundhouse in Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana. Several of his sons followed him into the railroad industry. In November 1916 he was transferred to Van Buren, Grant County, Indiana, where he took charge of the Nickel Plate coaling station. In Van Buren, after the death of his wife, he m. Pearl Hoover on Feb. 27, 1936. He became the town marshal and was known to have the prisoners to his house for breakfast on occasion, and was also the water works superintendent and street commissioner until the day died suddenly of a stroke.
