In 1805 financial troubles caused him, at about age fifty, to travel to the New World. Two years later, between August and November 1807, his wife and children followed him to New Jersey. John worked in as a partner in a livestock firm in New York City. After four years, the family moved to the Northwest Territory, settling at Lawrenceburg, then moving the following spring up Tanner's Creek and building a home there in 1811. Always the strong Methodist, John built a chapel on his land, at which the circuit riding preacher would call and hold services for the nearby neighbors. This family had come from northern England, and John's many letters home encouraged over a hundred other families to move and settle in what is now Dearborn County, Indiana. The Ewbank home still stands on John and Ann's farm, along with the original Methodist Chapel, at which they are buried. [Baker1, Ewbank1]
The fact that some dates, particularly from England, do not appear to line up in this era may be explained in part by the change to the Gregorian Calendar by England in 1752. In the Julian Calendar the new year began on 25 March. That is, 31 December 1581 was followed immediately by 1 January 1581; and 24 March 1581 was followed immediately by 25 March 1582. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII created the Gregorian Calendar in which the new year begins on 1 January, not on 25 March. Many parts of the western world declined to accept the Gregorian Calendar; for example, England retained the Julian Calendar until 1752. Not all colonists used the old style dates all the way up to 1752. [VA Notes]
