He emigrated to Grant County, Indiana with his parents. After marrying, he rented farm land near that of his fathers, then in 1858 purchased his own tract in Van Buren Township. He cleared and drained the land himself, eventually cultivating 40 acres. Oliver enlisted in the Civil War and saw service in Company C, 54th Regiment, under Colonel Mansfield. The Regiment participated in the Vicksburg campaign; his brother died of illness there and Oliver became sick enough to be sent home to headquarters in Indianapolis. Late in the century oil was discovered on his land, and the output of five wells amounted to "a handsome income." Jane and Oliver were longstanding members of the Society of Friends of Marion, Indiana.
